Schools rally behind conservation efforts in eThekwini

The recycling competition encouraged schools in eThekwini Municipality to actively participate in recycling initiatives.

LEARNERS and teachers from schools across eThekwini demonstrated their commitment to environmental conservation when they collected 40 tonnes of recyclable materials during a school recycling competition in Yellowwood Park recently.

The competition, which encouraged schools to actively participate in recycling initiatives, saw learners gather large quantities of plastic, paper, cardboard and cans.

The programme aimed to promote environmental awareness while teaching young people the importance of responsible waste management and sustainable living.

Schools worked tirelessly throughout the competition, with learners and teachers joining forces to collect recyclable materials from their homes, neighbourhoods and school communities.

Their efforts not only contributed to cleaner surroundings but also highlighted the positive impact that collective action can have on the environment.

City’s recycling mascot launched in Yellowwood Park

The event also marked the official launch of Recyco, the City’s new recycling mascot.

Designed to engage and inspire learners, Recyco will play a key role in promoting recycling and environmental responsibility throughout eThekwini.

The mascot is expected to visit schools and community events, helping to educate residents about the benefits of recycling and reducing waste.

Learners attending the function embraced the challenge with enthusiasm, turning the competition into a practical lesson on sustainability.

Through their participation, they gained a better understanding of how recycling helps:

1. Conserve natural resources.

2. Reduce landfill waste.

3. Protect the environment for future

Teachers also played a vital role in the success of the initiative by encouraging participation and raising awareness about environmental issues.
