NOTICE OF WATERCOURSE MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT PLANS FOR THE EXISTING SASOL PIPELINE NETWORK LOCATED WITHIN THE GAUTENG, NORTH WEST, FREE STATE, MPUMALANGA, AND KWAZULU NATAL PROVINCES, SOUTH AFRICA
INVITATION TO REGISTER, PARTICIPATE AND COMMENT ON THE PROCESS SRK Consulting South Africa (Pty) Ltd (SRK) is hereby giving notice of the watercourse Maintenance Management Plan (MMP) applications in term of the National Environmental Management Act (Act No. 107 of 1998, as amended) (NEMA) for maintenance activities on and in the proximity of the Sasol Gas (Pty) Ltd (Sasol) existing gas pipeline water crossings in the Gauteng, North West, Free State, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu Natal Provinces, South Africa. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Sasol proposes an MMP to maintain both man-made and ecological infrastructure in a manner that either improves the current state of, and/or reduces the negative impacts on a watercourse to ensure that ecosystem services are preserved/improved and to prevent further deterioration of the watercourse. A number of Listed Activities in the NEMA Listing Notices will be excluded if the MMP is accepted. LISTED ACTITIVIES THAT WILL BE EXCLUDED UPON MMP APPROVAL: Listing Notice 1Activity Activity 19The infilling or depositing of any material of more than 10 m3 into, or the dredging, excavation, removal or moving of soil, sand, shells, shell grit, pebbles, or rock of more than 10 m3 from a watercourse. Activity 27The clearance of an area of 1 hectare or more, but less than 20 hectares of indigenous vegetation. Listing Notice 2 Activity 24The extraction or removal of peat or peat soils, including the disturbance of vegetation or soils in anticipation of the extraction or removal of peat or peat soils. Listing Notice 3 Activity 12 The clearance of an area of 300 square meters or more of indigenous vegetation. PROJECT PROPONENT: Sasol Gas (Pty) Ltd PROJECT LOCATION: The proposed MMPs will be compiled for Sasol Gas Pipeline water crossings in the Mpumalanga, Gauteng, Free State, and KwaZulu Natal Provinces. ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT PRACTITIONER (EAP): SRK has been appointed to undertake the MMP application process. INTERESTED AND AFFECTED PARTIES (I&APs) REGISTRATION AND SUBMISSION OF COMMENTS: Stakeholders are invited to submit written comments and/or register on the project database. Submissions from stakeholders must include their name, contact details (specifying the preferred method of notification, e.g., e-mail), and an indication of any direct business, financial, personal, or other interest which they have in the application, to the contact person below. Only registered stakeholders will be kept informed of the process and notified of any future opportunities to participate.
