Hi, today I would like to share a little of my knowledge and love for dragonflies.
I like to refer to Dragonflies as natures little helicopters. They come is a wide variety of colours and sizes, however they all share the same basic looks and breeding habits.
They start their lives as Nymphs (babies) they are little wingless insects that live in water. In water they resemble the adults only they are not so brightly coloured and don’t have wings. In rivers and ponds they feed on small fish, tadpoles and other small water living insects. It takes the Nymphs a few months or even a year or two to mature.
When it is time they emerge from the water and climb a blade of grass, where they then shed their exoskeleton, now having fully developed wings and looking like the Dragonflies we see flying around.
As adults, Dragonflies feed on other small insects which are caught in mid air. People have a common belief that dragonflies can bite or even sting a person, but in fact they are absolutely harmless to us.
