Roy Funnell takes seniors bowls title

After the fours final was played, the AGM was held, and well attended.

ALL the men’s club competitions were concluded this week, and with just one more women’s final to be played, (next Saturday), the respective club comp secs can be congratulated for getting the jobs done well.

Roy Funnell romped home against Derek Stevens in the finals of the men’s senior singles at 21-8, Derek finding the slickness of the greens too quick for his liking. The men’s drawn fours final saw Richard Hendicott (in for Gary Moffatt who was involved at his home club), Steve van Rooyen, Bill Addinall and Brian Deets beating Robin Grobler, Kim Hawkins, Russell Shepherd and Shaun McAlister by 27-14. Tommy Simpkins continued on his winning ways in the men’s novice singles with a 21-9 win, and he and Wonke Zandile will resume their challenge in the event next Saturday morning at Durban Bowling Club. Support would be appreciated.

After the fours final was played, the AGM was held and was well attended. Arnie Harper and Anthony Carr remain president and vice-president respectively, Lorraine Du Preez and Richard Hendicott come in as honorary secretary and treasurer respectively, Mike Flack remains men’s competition secretary, and Lorinne Hawkins was elected as the women’s competition secretary. The general committee will comprise greenkeeper Lionel De la Rey together with Gwen Tait, Nicola Bauristhene, Eric Smit and Kim Hawkins.

Men’s selection committee will comprise Jeff Bolt, Kim Hawkins, Erics Smit and Swanson with their competition secretary, and the women’s selection committee will be Lorinne as competition secretary together with Gwen Tait, Jo-Anne Jordaan, Nicola Bauristhene and Barbara Neill. Congratulations to them all.

In the roadrunners pairs on Wednesday, Willie Gericke’s name kept cropping up when he won the main portion of the 60/40 board, as well as the meat raffle, then went on to win the first session with 2+10 with his partner Robbie Carr. Raj and Russell Rangiah won the second session with 2+8. Two teams had the same shot difference for the top prizes, but on a count out, Andy Cloete and Val McCaffrey were overall winners on 4+17 with Chris Pozyn and Bill Addinall taking second place with the same score but conceding more shots. Kurt Spack took the lesser amount of the 60/40 board and there were no winners of the lotto which will carry over to Lyn Wild’s pairs next Wednesday.

The Acutt’s fours skins on Sunday attracted fourteen teams in spite of a number of late withdrawals for various reasons. Harold Dixon, Alan Bouwer, John Campbell and Andy Cloete took the sportsman’s prize for the third time running with a score of 1-24. Norman Moore, Phil and Val McCaffrey and Johan Nel won first session with 8+8, and Richard Hendicott, Jeff Bolt, Russell Shepherd and Ronnie Hook took second session with 10+12. Steve Van Rooyen, Bob Hayward, Archie Fisher and Ken Koch finished second overall by a single shot with 17+19, and the winners were Queensburgh visitors Duncan Buckthorp, Shawn Sadler, Mike Slogrove and Mark Rogers with 18+18. The massive lamb pack was won by Mary Rust, Eric and Anne Smit won R40 and Andy Cloete R20 in the 60/40 board draw.

Drawn prizes of chocolates were awarded to skips Mike Freeman and Andy Rhodes, thirds Jimmy Neill and Tony Fourie, seconds Lorinne Hawkins and Joe McNamara, and leads Shawn Masters and Nigel Hawkins. This event will not be played next month as it clashes with the district trips. The next event is scheduled for 15 March.

Remember that night bowls commences on 10 February and runs for six weeks on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Get your entries in to Richard Hendicott or Jeff Bolt. Squad practise is scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5pm. Those wanting to play in the league are requested to attend.
