Lights out puts paid to night bowls
Thus teams Harper and Moffatt shared the first/second spoils and teams Van Rooyen and Bauristhene shared third/fourth place.
THE healthy group of spectators and supporters as well as all the teams that were involved in the playoffs of the Wanderers Alice Munnery night bowls league gathered on and around the greens last Wednesday evening for the play offs of the finals as scheduled.
However, a gremlin crept into the lighting system preventing the flood lights to function properly, and after players had waited patiently in the semi dark, waiting in vain for things to improve, organiser Jeff Bolt decided to call it off and share the available prize money between the contesting teams.
Thus teams Harper and Moffatt shared the first/second spoils and teams Van Rooyen and Bauristhene shared third/fourth place. Robbie Carr spun a coin with Michelle Nortje for sportsman’s prize and lost. Session prizes were awarded to teams V McCaffrey (who also got the prize for the largest win), M Flack, K Hawkins, R Carr, R Davids and B Hewer. After the prize giving, the attendees enjoyed music and dancing in Vic’s bar.
In the second round of the midweek league, Steve Van Rooyen with Richard Hendicott, Graham Funnell and Eric Redman had another good win (29-13) against a strong Durban team, while Chris Klopper and his men – Robbie Carr, Mike Flack and Dave Faifer – had another narrow loss at 12-17 to the strong Jimmy Mills Durban team.
The women had a turnout of only two complete teams for their drawn fours, thus only the one game was necessary to make it to the winning post. In this scenario, Lorinne Hawkins, Barbara Neill, Val Mc Caffrey and Chantal Hearnshaw had a good of 28-9 win over the team of Joan Bruce, Nicola Bauristhene, Anne Smit and Debbie Nortje to take the title.
The men’s interclub league got underway last Saturday. Wanderers has fielded five sides this year comprising 12 teams or 48 players. All sides played at home except the B side, which played at Durban. The A side won with a bonus point 7-0 against Umhlanga Rocks A, and the C side won 5-0 against Queens. All other sides went down without a point – B side 0-5 to Durban, D side 0-5 to Umhlanga B and E side to Parkhill C.
Last Friday’s various meat hamper winners were:
- Mutton pack Eddy Bailey;
- chunky steak pie and burger patties Dave Leuchars;
- chicken Pack Russell Shepherd;
- rump steak Eric Redman;
- pork ribs Rob Philogene;
- chicken Troy Simpkins.
The R900 snowball was not won as Chris van Rooyen was not present.
This coming week’s snowball of R1,000, as well as the meat raffle and music will be on Thursday, 2 April due to Friday, 3 April being Good Friday, a public holiday.
