Eric, Bob scoop roadrunners pairs

Durban to win their section in spite of there still being another round to play before the knockout stages.

WANDERERS Bowling Club’s roadrunners pairs was held last Wednesday in which 18 teams participated.

William Richardson (R40) and Lofty Cawthorne (R20) shared the 60/40 board spoils and Gerrie Jackson won the meat raffle.

The lotto was a carry over as nobody chose the winning combination of 5-6-7. Kurt and Dawn Spack won the first session with a very good 2+16 and Lofty Cawthorne and Gary Rogers won the second session with an almost as good 2+15, but the consistent pair of the day with the score of 4+24 were Eric Smit and Bob Hayward who took the main prize. Next Wednesday is the running of Lyn Wild’s pairs and next Sunday is the Acutts fours skins. Players wishing to enter the skins should complete the entry form or call Bob Hayward on 076-403-2265.

In the men’s midweek league, Steve, Richard, Graham and Eric had yet another victory (23-19) against a Parkhill side at Durban to win their section in spite of there still being another round to play before the knockout stages. The playoffs start on Wednesday, 22 April at Hillary Bowling Club. Good luck to Steve and team in the weeks ahead. Keep it going, chaps.

Saturday was the second round of the men’s interclub league which yielded mixed fortunes for Wanderers sides. The A team scored 3-4 away to Westville Country Club, thanks to a good win by Arnie, Kim, Bob and Russell who secured the bonus point with their 14-point win. Johnny and Steve were desperately unlucky to lose their matches, having both led for most of the way. It all went sour on the last end for them both. The B side won 5-2 at home to Toti C thanks to a good win by Ant, Robbie, Mike and Derek (+14) and Eric Smit, Clive, Mike (Freeman) and Ken Thomas (+1). Dennis, Robin, Chris and Eric Reds narrowly lost by a single shot. The C side did well to garner 4-1 away to Northlands. Archie, Keith, Peter and Dave had a +9 and Jim, Jeff, Terry and Tom peeled their match. The D side scored 2-3 against Toti E away. Eric Kitchenbrand, Bill Addinall, Eric Swanson and Neville Horner scored a plus 3 while Errol’s makeshift side lost by six on the last two ends. Well done to the E side for bouncing back and winning with a full house 5-0 against Durban G away. Colin, Phil, Dave and Johan won with a plus seven and Titch, Charles, Claude and Brian also won their match.

The league continues next Saturday with four of Wanderers’ five teams playing at home. Check the notice board in the course of the week to see the teams and indicate availability.

The club heard of the sad news of Peter Tayfield’s wife Sheila’s death on the night of Friday, 10 April following a fall and dislocating her hip. Hospitalisation resulted but sadly she never recovered. President Arnie Harper and his committee on behalf of all members extend their sincerest condolences to Peter and family.

The snowball of R1,000 was up for grabs on 2 April, but Roy Funnell was not present to collect, so it became worth R1,100 on 10 April, and again was not won when Christo Bosch was not present. On 2 April, the various meat hamper winners were: Lamb and burger patties Jenny Wellman; pork shoulder roast Dave Leuchars; chicken pack Robin Grobler; rump steak Chris Fourie; pork ribs Mark Swan; chicken Dan Paruk. The winners on 10 April were: Mutton pack and rump steak Des Demmer; deboned leg of lamb Shaun McAlister; chicken pack Eric and Anne Smit; farmstyle lamb ribs Hennie Geldenhuys; Moroccan style chicken Thomas Simpkins.

The Port Natal Oppenheimer mixed pairs began on the morning of Sunday, 12 April. Wanderers had nine entries in this event, playing at seven different venues. Graham and Nicola as well as Steve and Jackie were at Bluff; Dave and Kathy Faifer as well as Richard and Jo-Anne were at Durban; Kim and Lorinne were at Berea; Arnie and Mary were at Hillary; Anthony and Tanya were at Hillcrest; Roy and Val were a late entry and the club is not sure where they played and Robin and Barbara were at home. News is that Richard Hendicott and Jo-Anne Jordaan won their section by a mile, winning all three matches with a plus 53 in total. Roy Funnell and Val McCaffrey also managed to win all their matches and their sections. This puts them both in the last 32 and their campaigns will resume next Sunday morning at Amanzimtoti Bowling Club. Kim and Lorinne came very close, winning two and peeling one; Robin and Barbara won two, lost one, as did Graham and Nicola. Anthony and Tanya won one, peeled one and lost one; Steve and Jackie lost two, won one as did Arnie and Mary. Dave and Kathy retired during the playing of the second game.

The popular breakfast trips was played on greens B and C in tandem with the Oppenheimer which was played on A green. Runners up on 4+15 were Dennis Gericke, Joe McNamara and Claude Newman and the overall winners with the score of 4+27 were Clive Symons, Eric Swanson and Mike Freeman. Diarise 1 May for the annual VC Memorial Bowls Day in aid of frail care at Flame Lily Park. This is one of the largest tournaments of the year and is played at five venues, in mufti and involves two non-bowlers in a side of four players playing two games of 10 ends (with a twist). This is great fun, and as it is a public holiday it would be a great opportunity to invite non-bowling friends to join in. There is a full on lunch and show at Flame Lily after play and stacks of really good prizes. Call either Steve Van Rooyen on 073-489-4369 or Bob Hayward on 076-403-2265 to enter your side.
