WITH the SA nationals having started on Saturday in Gauteng, Wanderers Bowling Club had three sides of 12 players entered.
The pairs started things off, and after the first day’s play, three teams had won all three of their games: Gary Moffatt and Shaun McAlister, Pat and Terrance McGlynn, and Steve Van Rooyen and Graham Funnell.
On the second day, Gary and Shaun fell by the wayside, but the other two prevailed and both went on to win their first play-off match. Both are now in the last 16, and the pairs will resume on Thursday while the fours get underway from Monday. Wanderers wishes Pat, Terry, Steve and Graham all the best in their quest for glory.
Last Wednesday’s roadrunners pairs was contested between 12 teams. Bluff visitors Kurt and Dawn Spack won the first session (2+5), and Chris Pozyn and Lorraine Smith took the second session (2+11). Colin Nicholas and Johan Nel won the overall first prize with 4+19. Derek Stevens (R40) and Ron Jackson (R20) shared the 60/40 board spoils, and Kurt Spack added to his session win by also winning the meat raffle. The lotto was a carryover. No-one had 1-3-6.
In Sunday’s Acutt’s fours skins, a last-minute team was scratched together to make up 12 teams. These guys then had the cheek to win the first session. Well done to Eric Swanson, Dirk Roos, Neville Horner and Luke Van Rooyen who had 8+8 winning on count out from Arnie Harper’s side. Second session went to Dennis Gericke, Chris Klopper, Peter Prenger and Gordon Chislett on 8+11. In second place overall with 17+5 was the team of Clive Symons, Mike and Jackie Freeman and Jo-Anne Jordaan who got the R100 Bluff Spur vouchers, and overall winners – and on the perch, which is now worth R450 – was the team of Robbie Carr, Keith Wild, Brian Hollis and Tommy Simpkins. As this was not Robbie’s regular team, as two were away playing in the nationals, he will have to have the same players next month for a chance of winning the perch. And can you believe: the sportsman’s prize went the way of Lofty Cawthorne, Bob Hayward, Archie Fisher and Ken Koch who were actually ‘on the perch’ from last month. Funny ole game this bowls. Jimmy Neill won R40 and Peter Prenger R20 on the 60/40 board, and Keith Wild won a huge pork roast in the meat raffle.
Last Friday, the various meat pack winners were:
- Lamb pack Thomas Simpkins;
- rolled beef Dan Paruk;
- pork roast Steve Maree;
- rump steak Thomas Simpkins;
- chicken pack Porky;
- chicken Daniel Nel.
The R500 snowball was won by JP Wessels.
