The championships provide a platform for young athletes from all of the province’s districts to battle it out in their various codes and respective age groups. The brothers were both awarded their KZN Colours for Athletics after excelling in their respective categories.
Mason, a Grade Eight learner at Glenwood Boys’ High School, competed in the U13 100m race and won second place.

“I have had some setbacks and wasn’t able to compete in other events due to having a hamstring injury this year. However, with the assistance of the physiotherapist at my school, I was able to get back onto the field quite quickly. I am proud of my achievement and am looking forward to the championships,” he said.
Carter, a Grade Five learner at Bushlands Primary School, competed in the U11 high jump category and won first place.
“This is my first year doing athletics and competing in a competition. I have worked very hard and improved each day. I am very proud to have won my first gold medal,” he said.
