If you are planning a fishing expedition these holidays, here are some of the best fishing spots to visit along the south coast and other coastal areas near Durban.

Be it freshwater or saltwater angling, you must possess a valid fishing licence if you plan to fish in Durban. Both permits are available for purchase at any Post Office.

Although fishing is great along the KZN coastline throughout the year, expect to catch different species at different times. For summer fishing, you could land shad, bronze bream, pompano, brusher, stumpnose, stone bream, blacktail, cave bass, sharks or flatfish.

The southern part of Durban features good shore fishing corners. The Bluff has two beaches, Garvies Beach and Ansteys Beach, which are ideal for surf casting.

More exotic specimens abide in the uMhlanga area. Umhlanga Beach offers great angling from the shore, while Umhlanga Rocks is famous for their shallow waters that attract various fish.

  1. Umkomaas River-mouth and beach

These are great spots for anglers of any level, and the area is known for its great kob and shad catches.

Those looking to catch sharks, shad and Garrick should head to this popular Scottburgh fishing spot. It’s ideal for fisherfolk of all levels.

  1. Margate Pier

Get there early morning to find a spot on this pier, renowned for its shad, kob and Garrick and suited to all levels.
