Some of the sporting activities on the day included volleyball and tug-o-war, among others.
THE Merewent Athletic Club hosted a fun sports day as part of their ‘moving forward’ initiative, held at the Dhubri Road grounds in Merebank recently.
Anusha Jugoo, the club’s public relations officer, said the community came together to celebrate unity and sportsmanship and to enjoy a day of fun and laughter.

She said the day aimed to foster connections between neighbours while promoting a healthy, active lifestyle.
Jugoo said the day kicked off with an enthusiastic start as participants gathered for the club’s breakfast run/walk at 07:00. Runners and walkers of all ages took to the picturesque paths surrounding the grounds, getting their daily dose of exercise while enjoying the refreshing morning air.
“Following the invigorating exercise, attendees regrouped at our clubhouse for a hearty and nutritious health breakfast. The gathering provided a perfect opportunity for community members to mingle and strengthen social bonds,” she said.
Jugoo said that, thereafter, the participants dove into a wide array of sporting activities, such as volleyball and tug-o-war, as well as other fun activities, such as the popular card game, thunee.
“It was definitely a day filled with excitement and friendly competition,” she said.
Jugoo said the initiative was a joint effort with several local organisations and sponsors.

“Stallholders, who were also present, offered a variety of goods and services to the attendees and showcased their organisations with banners and gazebos. A colourful poster with the logos of the various organisations that participated made the perfect background for the many pictures taken to encapsulate our fabulous team spirit.
“It was a fantastic day for all those who attended. The event was blessed with perfect weather, and the spirit of camaraderie and togetherness shone brightly throughout. The initiative is not just a celebration of sports and community but a testament to the strength of people coming together with one goal: unity. It’s a reminder that, despite the various distractions and obligations in our lives, the power of unity can make any day a memorable one. This initiative will continue with more events to come soon,” she said.
In celebration of the 40th anniversary, the club will be hosting a dinner and dance at the Merebank Regional Hall on December 2, at 18:00. For more information, contact Jagoo on 083 658 8961.
