Autism awareness drive in Durban

Action in Autism hopes to spread awareness through the distribution of pamphlets and discussions ahead of World Autism Day on 2 April.

IN observation of World Autism Awareness Day (2 April), Action in Autism Durban will hosts an awareness campaign to help the communities of Durban understand the lives of people with autism.

From 9am to 11am they will visit shopping centres in and around Durban, distributing pamphlets in Zulu and English and stickers to highlight the condition of autism and the lack of facilities and resources for those with the condition. T-shirts will also be on sale.

Thereafter, from 2pm to 4pm stakeholders, including parents, people with autism, teachers, department of education officials, therapists and doctors meet to discuss how to best serve people with autism at the APN Portuguese Club, 5 Wright Place, Carrington Heights.

According to Action in Autism, delivery of early childhood development services for children with disabilities, especially those with autism spectrum disorders, is under par, restricting the children to the role of spectators. There are only a few ECD centres equipped to meet the learning needs of children with autism, and there are no standards in place to accommodate infants and toddlers with autism.
