A concerned mom and a resident of Dobsonville, Elsie Shiphamele, says the death of Karabo Mabitiela (7) and Neo Mosope (12) should be a warning to the ward councillor and to the Gauteng.
The two children drowned in a valley which residents say has been a concern for years.
Mabitiela and Mosope were found dead months ago by Emergency Management Services divers in dark waters of the valley that links Dobsonville and Bramfischerville .
Shiphamele says she is worried because nothing has been done about the gorge where the children drowned.
She claims that next to the gorge there is a soccer field and that boys as young as five go there to practice football every day after school.
“I am pleading to the councillor to find a solution to the problem to avoid history repeating itself.
“I want to know why the councillor and the municipality have not yet acted on this matter or are they waiting for more deaths to occur?” said Shiphamele.
Councillor Jabulani Thomo’s response on the matter was residents must know that he is doing all he can to solve the problem.
Thomo said budget issues must be taken into consideration since the city’s budget panel allocates finance for issues pending on the Integrated Development Plan (IDP).
“Issues that have not been achieved under development terms are likely to be addressed first before others could follow.
He said installing a fence will not completely resolve the problem.
“What we need is for the area to be closed because that’s the major solution to eliminate all the troubles,” said Thomo.
Thomo urges residents to be patient and to work with him till all is settled.
