Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers about to start their shift were informed by Naturena residents that occupants of a white Chevrolet bakkie had robbed a pedestrian of his cellphone.
Residents informed officers that the robbery had occurred at approximately 6 am on October 9. Officers spotted the vehicle and immediately gave chase.
According to Wayne Minnaar, chief superintendent of JMPD, officers called for backup and the fleeing bakkie was tracked to Eldorado Park.
A male occupant of the vehicle drew a firearm and fired several shots at pursuing officers who returned fire.
The chase ended in a collision between JMPD, South African Police Services and the vehicle involved in Milnerton Road, Extension Four.
All three vehicles were damaged, but law enforcement officers and the occupants of the bakkie sustained no serious injuries.
Minnaar says that two men and two women were arrested in connection with the robbery, while a fifth man, believed to be the gunman, fled the scene on foot.
A charge has been laid at the Mondeor police station and a manhunt launched for the escaped gunman.
