In celebration of National Marriage Week, the National Department of Social Development embarked on a project to teach married couples how to prevent divorces in their relationships.
The project was held the Church of Christ in Chiawelo. According to Constance Legodi, who works at the Department of Justice, 3 000 divorces were reported last year and the number is increasing every year.
“I work with divorces and many couples who file for divorces are between the ages of 21 and 35 and that is extremely terrible.
“Couples should get professional advice before getting into marriage,” said Legodi. She said some of the things that caused divorces included war at home, financial difficulties, lack of communication between couples and the absence of love among them.
“These things usually lead to divorces and that may affect the children in the family,” she said. Jabulani Phokoe of the department encouraged residents at the event to oppose divorces and enjoy their marriages.

“Marriage is very important,” he said. “It is a socially approved relationship that joins two people and that is expected to be stable and lasting.
“Men may be from Mars and women from Venus but if these different creatures actively plot out a successful marriage, they will have high material quality despite their differences.
“Building stronger marriages helps build a stronger nation.” The goal of National Marriage Week was to elevate marriage as a national issue in the media and with policy leaders and to promote the benefits of marriage that stronger marriages bring economic stability to individuals and the nation, and provided the best environment for thriving children.
The theme of the occasion was ‘Do something special and give something special’.
