Sakhane Youth Development Forum introduces themselves
The programme is open to anyone to attend. It is not just for residents in Westbury but for everyone.
Digital instructor and founder of Sakhane Youth Development Forum, Cavall Elliott shares what their non-profit organisation offers to the community.
“We focus on developing young people in the ‘Kasi’, it’s about upskilling the youth with the minimal requirements to build up a CV. We focus on Microsoft digital literacy, the job readiness programme focuses on them getting the computer literate skills and it’s here for those who cannot go out to study to obtain the qualifications. We do the formulation of CVs, interview preparations and thereafter getting a possible opportunity in whatever career they choose to go into,” explained Elliott.
The founder went further to explain that businesses cannot allocate certain opportunities to people in the communities because they cannot find them, so it is Sekanies dream to bring people to the businesses who are looking for employees, and that the organisation then becomes the vehicle of opportunities.
“We are kicking off now in Westbury, the City of Johannesburg has collaborated with us, they have an active lab here and they have given us to use three days in a week, that is Monday, Wednesday and Friday so that we can run the project. “This lab is situated inside of the Westbury Library,” added Elliott.
The programme is open to anyone to attend. It is not just for residents in Westbury but for everyone. The programme is free.
The certificate that will be given to the students is that of Microsoft, although the content is free for anyone to access, Elliott explained that the organisation allows the student to understand the course better and in her words, they ‘bring the content to life’.
According to Elliott, in order for the student to get the certificate, they have to have to pass the course with an 80%. The Sakhane Youth Development Forum is three years old but has only come to the community in April this year.
The job readiness programme is for the youth between 18 and 35-years-old and the other is called digital disruption which caters to the age group between the ages of 35-years-old to 60 years old. The classes are on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Students are required to be in class only once a week from 9am until 11am. The organisation is in need of students who are interested in doing the course. If you are interested in the programme, you can sign up for it at the Westbury Library.
