‘Ignite – Women sparking change’ in Eldorado Park

The first Ignite group, which consisted of 11 girls from Eldorado Park was created with the assistance of the Gail Britoe Foundation and the sponsorship of Cirebelle.

The official launch of the Ignite – Women sparking change mentorship programme took place at Midfield Estate. Ignite aims to provide life skills, study skills, career coaching, and most importantly, a mindset that looks beyond current life conditions.

The first Ignite group, which consisted of 11 girls from Eldorado Park was created with the assistance of the Gail Britoe Foundation and the sponsorship of Cirebelle.

“Ignite sees my long term goal of creating a mentoring group between women and young girls from challenging and at-risk backgrounds. I want to teach these girls that their circumstances never have to define them,” said Sehaam Bateman, founder of the Ignite mentorship programme.

“This first introductory session was focused on getting to know the girls, the challenges they are facing and the topics they would like the cover over the next few sessions. They were taught how to write and affirm their strengths, how to set goals and create a vision for their future,” she added.

Videan Jacobs and Ensley Britoe from the Gail Britoe Foundation accompanied the girls and said that they appreciate Bateman for always keeping the youth from Eldorado Park in mind.

“Much appreciation to Ignite for bringing such a tremendous opportunity for our young girls in the community and for exposing us to a life-changing programme,” said Jacobs.

“The programme wasn’t all about sitting in one place and listening to one person speak. The girls were accommodated with a spontaneous breakfast, she then took the girls for a walk on one of her favourite daily jogging routes. This allowed us to bond with the girls,” Jacobs added.

Bateman said that her long term goal is to start to Ignite groups globally.

“The plan is not to limit the Ignite mentorship programme to just one community. As part of my short term goal, Ignite will be sparking change in Port Elizabeth with Harniem Ebrahim as the Ignite leader. My daughter Tashreeqa Jappie will be leading the Ignite group in Cape Town and I will be extending the programme to Durban as well, with the long term goal being that by this time next year, our Ignite teams will all come together for a big end of year celebration,” said Bateman.

She concluded by thanking Cirebelle for sponsoring the girls from Eldorado Park.
“I would also like to thank Videan Jacobs for chaperoning the girls as well as Harniem Ebrahim who flew up from Port Elizabeth to spend the day with us,” said Bateman.
