Kliptown man gets 40 years for kidnapping, robbery and rape

Following a dedicated investigation by local law enforcement, a series of crimes committed by Sibusiso Zondo in Kliptown have led to his 40-year prison sentence.

The rigorous investigation led by Detective Sergeant Ellen Mampitla Mofokeng led to a Kliptown man sentenced to 40 years in prison for a series of violent crimes, including kidnapping, aggravated robbery, and rape.

The accused, Sibusiso Zondo, was arrested following a robbery and assault at Kliptown Flats on October 28, 2018.

The victim reported the crime to local police, pointing out Zondo as one assailant.

A second suspect, Siphosethu Vanqase, initially managed to evade capture during the arrest. However, he was subsequently apprehended and charged.

Vanqase appeared in court on multiple occasions, but unfortunately, he passed away on April 21, 2024, before the matter could be concluded.

Zondo was later found to be linked to multiple criminal activities.

After months of investigation, Mofokeng opposed bail and worked tirelessly on the case, securing key evidence that led to his conviction.

The accused was convicted on charges, including kidnapping, aggravated robbery, and rape, with the following sentences of imprisonment:
Count 1 (kidnapping): 3 years
Count 2 (kidnapping): 3 years
Count 3 (kidnapping): 3 years
Count 4 (aggravated robbery): 10 years
Count 5 (aggravated robbery): 10 years
Count 6 (rape): 20 years of imprisonment.

Under Section 280(2) of the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977, the sentences for the kidnapping charges (counts 1, 2, and 3) will run concurrently with the sentence for rape (count 6). Zondo will serve an effective 40-year sentence.

Kliptown SAPS acting station commander Colonel RDM Sithebe said they understand that taking measures of imprisonment is not always a pleasant task, but this conviction has secured the safety of many individuals in the community.

“The SAPS are committed to ensuring the public’s safety, and we are incredibly grateful for the dedication shown by Mofokeng in this case.”

The successful conviction of Zondo demonstrates the tireless work of the SAPS to bring criminals to justice and protect the public from harm. Mofokeng was praised for her diligent investigation, securing justice for the victims and the Kliptown community.
