SAPS nabs 293 suspects in festive season operation
Police operations across Johannesburg result in hundreds of arrests, recovering stolen goods and tackling crimes from robbery to drug possession.
Law enforcement agencies in the Johannesburg District apprehended 293 suspects during the Safer Festive Season Operations, conducted between January 2 and 5.
The comprehensive operations, led by acting district commissioner Brigadier Molefi Tsotsotso under the banner of Operation Shanela, aimed to ensure the safety and security of residents during the holiday period.
The operations targeted high-crime areas, including Lenasia South, Sophiatown, Dobsonville, and Sandringham, resulting in numerous arrests for various crimes.

Sophiatown and Lenasia South
The teams arrested 44 suspects on January 2 for offences ranging from the illegal possession of firearms and dangerous weapons to drug possession, employing undocumented persons, public drinking, drunk driving, and malicious property damage.
Dobsonville and Sandringham
Further operations conducted from January 4 into the early hours of January 5 led to the arrest of 50 suspects.
Charges included drug possession, illegal gambling, operating liquor establishments without proper licensing, and harbouring undocumented individuals.
They also confiscated a vehicle in Dobsonville, linked to a house robbery in Krugersdorp, and recovered a plasma television.
Detective-led arrests
A total of 199 suspects were apprehended for serious crimes, including murder, attempted murder, rape, sexual assault, house robbery, business robbery, armed robbery, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and the possession of unlicensed firearms.
Tsotsotso praised the collaborative efforts of law enforcement and stakeholders involved in the operations.

“These arrests demonstrate our unwavering commitment to ensuring that the residents of Johannesburg feel safe during this festive season,” he said.
“More boots on the ground have been a key factor in maintaining order and security across the district.”
The arrested suspects will appear in various magistrate courts across Johannesburg in the coming days.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to law enforcement as the Safer Festive Season campaign continues.
