CIT robbery suspects arrested

A swift police response led to the arrest of five suspects following a cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery in Ekangala, Tshwane. Police recovered a getaway vehicle and over 100 rounds of ammunition, with the search ongoing for other individuals involved in the May 4 incident.

According to reports, the suspects used a BMW to ram the CIT van.

They then bombed the vehicle and stole an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing in multiple vehicles.

Gauteng Highway Patrol officers responded swiftly and spotted two of the getaway cars—a silver Mercedes-Benz and a silver Mazda CX-3—prompting a high-speed chase.

While on the N12 highway, the suspects opened fire on the police, who returned fire. One of the getaway vehicles was pursued until the driver lost control.

The suspects then abandoned the vehicle and fled into a maize field, continuing to shoot at the officers.

Police were joined by private security personnel, and the search continued until five suspects were apprehended.

Authorities also recovered a large cache of ammunition.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the arrested suspects were out on bail for previous cash-in-transit robberies committed in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo.

The search for the remaining suspects is ongoing.

The arrested individuals are expected to appear before the Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing charges that include cash-in-transit robbery, attempted murder, and possession of ammunition.
