Entities unite to bring GBV awareness in Naledi

The purpose of commemorating the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children was to raise awareness of the dangers of gender-based violence in the community.

Greater Protea Community Policing Forum (CPF), in collaboration with the SAPS and the Youth Crime Prevention Desk, held a 16 Days of Activism event at Naledi Ext 2 Sport Complex, recently.

Johannesburg YCPD District PRO Moses Seaga said that the purpose of commemorating the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children was to raise awareness of the dangers of gender-based violence in the community.

“Instead of inviting young people to this event, we chose to invite senior citizens because we wanted to educate them about gender-based violence and because many of them experience GBV without realising it.

“We have elderly people who are being raped, bullied, and abused in their homes, so we are attempting to educate them about GBV,” said Seaga.

Brigade officer from community safety Nariah Seshopa said they attended the event with the intention of helping the victims, educating the elders about GBV, and helping those attending understand their duty as community brigades.

“We are here to make our elderlies know our work. We want them to know that our role is to support and protect them,” she said.

Chairperson of the Greater Protea CPF Sipho Kubheka said they have dedicated the 16 Days of Activism to the elderlies because they believe that they are being neglected.

“We have dedicated today to the elderly because we know that they are being mistreated in their homes by their children or even grandchildren, and no one seems to be taking that seriously or even addressing it.

“We feel that without elderly citizens, the community would be without a backbone, and the nation would be doomed because those are the people we look up to and typically seek advice from,” said Kubheka.
