Joburg Speaker demands justice for murdered teen during emotional family visit

Speaker Nobuhle Mthembu expressed her deepest sorrow over the tragic death of Likhona Fose, condemning the brutal act and calling for swift justice.

City of Johannesburg speaker Nobuhle Mthembu extended her heartfelt condolences to the family of 14-year-old Likhona Fose during a visit to their home in Durban Deep, Roodepoort, on June 4.

Likhona, a Grade 8 learner at Ikusasalethu Secondary School, was tragically found mutilated on June 1.

Speaking to the media, Councillor Mthembu condemned the brutal killing and called for urgent action.

“This is a dark moment for our city and our country. We should all hang our heads in shame for allowing such horror to befall one of our children,” she said.

“The murder of young Likhona is not only a crime—it is a betrayal of our values and a stain on our collective conscience.

“I call on every resident, every parent, every community leader, and every institution to rise and be counted in the fight against child abuse. Protecting our children must be a non-negotiable, daily priority.”

Mthembu urged the SAPs and other relevant authorities to ensure that justice is served.

“The people of Braamfischerville and the entire City of Johannesburg deserve to know that this case will be pursued without fear or favour. No stone must be left unturned in bringing the perpetrators to justice.”

Likhona’s grandfather, Thozane Mlenze, described her as a respectful and ambitious young girl with dreams of building a better life.

“Likhona was a good child. She didn’t drink or use drugs. She was dedicated to her schoolwork, never missed a day, and was always respectful to her teachers. We are still in shock. She had so much potential, and now she’s gone,” he said.

Likhona Fose will be laid to rest on June 14 in Queenstown, Eastern Cape.
