New smart licensing centre launched in Soweto to improve service delivery

The Gauteng government has opened a high-tech licensing centre at Protea Glen Mall, bringing faster, more accessible services to residents and easing congestion at traditional offices.

The MEC for Roads and Transport in Gauteng, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, officially launched a state-of-the-art licensing centre at Protea Glen Mall on July 22.

The launch forms part of the Gauteng Provincial Government’s commitment to delivering convenient, efficient services closer to residents.

The new facility is set to enhance the quality of licensing services in the area, featuring modern technology and a strong emphasis on professionalism and community engagement.

“Through meticulous planning, the integration of technology, and active community engagement, the smart licensing service centre is poised to become a valuable addition to our service infrastructure,” said Diale-Tlabela.

She added that the initiative prioritises accessibility, efficiency and customer satisfaction, and is expected to ease congestion often experienced at traditional licensing offices.

“The establishment of smart Driving Licence Testing Centres (DLTCs) in these regions represents a commendable step toward enhancing government services in townships, informal settlements and hostels (TISH),” the MEC noted.

She emphasised the Department’s continued efforts to meet the needs of underserved TISH communities, with a focus on inclusive service delivery.

The Protea Glen centre’s opening represents significant progress in modernising the licensing process and ensuring regulatory services are available where they’re needed most.

Under the National Road Traffic Act (Act 93 of 1996), the MEC is responsible for the registration, testing, and licensing of motor vehicles and drivers in the province.

This legislative function covers a broad portfolio, including licensing learner drivers, vehicles, driving schools, instructors, number plate embossers and manufacturers — making it one of the largest regulatory areas in Gauteng.
