Siphelele ‘Pele Pele’ Mchunu brings laughter to Gibson Kente Theatre

Siphelele Mchunu, known as ‘Pele Pele’, will take the stage on November 14 for a hilarious one-man show filled with true-life stories, clever observations and infectious energy.

Get ready for a side-splitting evening with Siphelele Mchunu, affectionately known as ‘Pele Pele’, an award-winning comedian, radio presenter and entertainer, when he takes to the stage at the Gibson Kente Theatre on November 14.

With over 15 years of experience in the entertainment industry, ‘Pele Pele’ is known for his sharp wit, clever observations and infectious energy.

His journey to stardom began in 2008 as a scriptwriter and comedian for Desmond Dube’s show Dube on 2 Reloaded. He later joined Jozi FM as a presenter, hosting the breakfast show and becoming the station’s first male comedian. His talent earned him the Savannah Audience Choice Comedy Award in 2019.

“It’s already been 17 years in this comedy game. What sets me apart from other comedians is being in the game for almost two decades, being recognised and awarded with the Comics Choice Award, a huge achievement in the comedy industry, and my relatable humour.

“I tell people’s real-life stories. I never pinpoint individuals, but I tell ordinary human life stories that others might shy away from, and also share true-life embarrassing stories from my life,” ‘Pele Pele’ said.

He added that he has had a passion for scriptwriting since his high school and tertiary days, and discovering this talent motivated him to pursue comedy as a career.

“I used to write funny skits, but they weren’t paying. Seeing my work portrayed on stage was a huge achievement.

“When I wrote for Desmond Dube, it felt amazing to see my written skits performed by well-known professional actors on SABC 2. I even made good money and put a deposit on my first car, a milestone considering where I started.”

Of his upcoming one-man show, ‘Pele Pele’ said audiences can expect two hours of undiluted laughter, but this will not be his first time performing for a large crowd.

“I don’t think comedians go that far with their one-man shows. I will talk about everything that happens in the days of our lives. Fasten your seatbelts and brace yourselves, because we are about to take off.”

“I’ve performed on many stages, but what stands out is my first show at the Carnival City Big Top Arena.

“I had never performed in front of 5 000 people. The echo of their laughter was so infectious that I had to pause to let them finish before delivering the next joke. That’s not something you see every day in comedy.”

Residents can buy tickets online to secure their spot for this hilarious evening.

“There is no manual on how to prepare for a show like this. I cringe every time I look at my written jokes and wonder if they are enough or if people will participate.

“But I always remember why I have an award, and my stress levels go down. I thank God for all the bookings I get, whether it’s a comedy show, a corporate event or an MC role.

“Moving forward, I want to host one-man shows at various venues across Gauteng and, eventually, other provinces. I hope people continue to support me. From day one, I have never disappointed and will keep upping my game to deliver the best.”
