Sanca Soweto gets IT equipment and furniture donation

The IT equipment and office furniture handover was part of the Department of Roads and Transport’s outreach initiatives.

The Department of Roads and Transport handed over IT equipment and office furniture to the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (Sanca) in White City on February 9.

Speaking to the media, Roads and Transport director Russel Mahibila said the programme formed part of the department’s outreach initiatives. He said the MEC of Roads and Transport leads several programmes as part of the department’s work.

“This forms part of our broader outreach programme. We usually begin the year with our Back-to-School campaign in January, and initiatives like this one are an extension of that effort, as we continue contributing to the communities we come from and serve,” he said.

Mahibila added that the organisation they are donating to is imperative to the community, as it does critical work.

He said the department is battling with a high rate of road accidents, particularly among youth aged 18 to 40, many involved in collisions or pedestrian incidents, with substance abuse and drinking and driving as key contributors.

“It is important for us to contribute to Sanca, as this supports our goal of building a society that is responsible and mindful of how we treat each other in public and private.

“The IT equipment will help the organisation provide young people with skills and guidance to become better individuals,” Mahibila said.

Sanca Soweto director Zakithi Nsele said the IT equipment will help the organisation because they plan to establish a skills centre for their clients, allowing young people to learn new skills and empowering them to build better futures.

“The IT equipment is essential because we work with clients for four months, after which they return home, but many have nothing to go back to. So, providing them with skills is necessary, and we have applied for funding from the Department of Social Development to start a proper skills centre. This is just the beginning,” she said.

She added that they were grateful to the Department of Roads and Transport, as the equipment will be useful for their service users, and expressed hope that more support would follow.
