Health department warns public about fake HIV grant claim

The South African Department of Health has warned the public about false social media posts claiming people living with HIV will receive a monthly R1 200 grant from May, urging citizens to verify information from credible sources before sharing it online.

The department has issued a warning to the public about misinformation circulating on social media that claims people living with HIV will receive a monthly grant of R1 200 from May.

In a statement, the department described the message as fake and misleading, emphasising that no such grant has been announced.

Officials urged members of the public to verify information before sharing it online to avoid spreading confusion.

“The department would like to alert members of the public about fake news spreading on social media platforms,” the statement read.

The department stressed that unverified claims can mislead communities and create unnecessary uncertainty, particularly among people affected by the virus.

Health authorities also encouraged people living with HIV to ignore the misinformation and continue taking their life-saving antiretroviral therapy, which is available free of charge at public health facilities across the country.

According to the department, consistent treatment allows people living with HIV to live longer and healthier lives. Regular use of antiretroviral medication also helps suppress the virus, preventing it from multiplying and reducing the risk of drug resistance and treatment failure.

The department further advised members of the public to rely on official government communication channels and trusted sources when seeking information about health programmes and support services.
