Diepkloof family celebrates umemulo ceremony for 21-year-old daughter
A young woman from Diepkloof marked her transition to adulthood with a traditional umemulo ceremony, celebrating culture, discipline and community values.
The Malebye family recently celebrated a proud moment when their daughter Resiame (21) enjoyed her umemulo ceremony at their home in Diepkloof.
Umemulo is a traditional ceremony observed in the Zulu culture, marking a young woman’s transition to adulthood, usually around 21 years.
The ceremony is usually done for maiden girls, working with various traditions in maiden groups, in this case, one from Pennyville.

“This is a proud moment for me because I made my family and community proud. These days it is not easy for young people to reach this age as maidens, but with the help of our group and the elderly women who assist us, I managed to see this beautiful day,” Resiame said.

She added that being a maiden has added value in her life and that some things are worth the wait.
“In our group, they teach us about the importance of protecting ourselves from falling pregnant at a young age, and the risks of STIs and STDs.
“Since joining the group in 2022, I have always felt a sense of belonging, and I have also formed great relationships with my fellow maidens.”
Although Resiame is Tswana, her love for this tradition would not stop her from having her umemulo ceremony.
Her mother, Ntina Malebye, could not contain her excitement.
“This is a proud moment for all of us. Resiame has done well for herself, and she deserves to be celebrated,” Ntina said
