Community group steps in to curb bullying in Diepkloof schools

Programme aims to address violence, gangs and learner safety through school visits.

Abahambe National Civic Movement has taken it upon itself to address the ongoing bullying issues at local schools in Diepkloof.

The team of Thabo Ngayo, Bongani Khumalo, Thulani Dube and Thamdi Ramela visits schools to address the learners and give them advice on how to report bullying.

According to the president of the team, Ngayo, their movement deals with social ills that affect the community of Diepkloof. This includes crime, service delivery and the prevalent issue of school bullying.

“We are tackling the issue of bullying in schools in our recent programme. The programme took place following the incident that took place at a street bash in December 2025, where children were attending an event, and they ended up being robbed and assaulted by a group of young boys calling themselves ‘Amapantsula’, also known as a local gang.

“The incident claimed the life of a 19-year-old, leaving three others hospitalised with gunshot wounds and injuries. This is when we knew that we needed to combat crime because the issues of gangs also developed in schools, and other learners were bullied in and outside of the school premises,” Ngayo said.

He added that some of the gang members would terrorise the learners after school and rob them of their belongings.

“We started seeing that it is important to engage with the schools to address this issue of bullying and restore the dignity in schools without disturbing the peace of other learners.

“We visited various local schools, including Namedi, Madibane, Fons Luminis, and Fedilitas Secondary School, where we spoke to the principals, who granted us the opportunity to address the learners at the assembly point.

“They have also appreciated our work and expressed gratitude that, since then, they have noted a significant change in the learners’ behaviour. The purpose of the address is to remind the learners that these schools have an academic history that has to be upheld at all times and to also remind them to respect their teachers.”

“As of yet, we have not been called to attend to a case of bullying in schools, but in a case where we are, we will call the bully and the victim, as well as both parents, the principal and the SGB to get to the bottom of the incident.

“The aim is to also play a rehabilitation role for the bully to ensure that they are also integrated to become better learners, because at times you might find that their behaviour started from home.

“Going forward, we are hoping to have peaceful and safe schools in Diepkloof so that our learners can thrive in their education without any destruction.”
