Mother's Month Tournament celebrates women in the community

Women from across the community gathered at George Ndlovu grounds in Soweto for a tournament celebrating Mother’s Month through sport and unity.

A Mother’s Month Tournament was held at George Ndlovu grounds in Pimville, Soweto, on May 23. The day was to get mothers and women from the community to participate in their respective teams and challenge each other while having fun.

As Mother’s Day was celebrated recently, organisers saw it fit to celebrate all women, from young to old, with a day filled with fun and sports.

The event was also to help relieve the headstrong women in the community from the daily challenges they face in their households and lives.

Organiser of the event, Nakwane Sithole, who is also the MD of Lotti’s 11 Football Club said, “We identified what is common in the community and came to the conclusion that sports, specifically soccer, is what brings the community together, and thought why not celebrate the women in our community in that way.

’’The tight game started off with Khizo’s and Blue House, with Khizo’s winning 2-0. The second semi-final was between Lotti’s 11 and Zoolake General with Zoolake General winning with the score of 3-2. The curtain raiser was a match between the elderly, with Vuka Grannies and Pimville Kasi Heroes ending with a score of 17-0.

“As women, we are honored that we are being thought of and celebrated, especially in our community. I am happy that we are out of our homes to come partake in sports and keep fit while clearing our minds,’’ said Kidi Mofube, shooter from Vuka FC.

Mofube shared that they are well-known for taking cups and that was what she anticipated as they won at the curtain raiser against Pimville Kasi Heroes.

Ward 22 Clr Sebenzile Mabuza, who came out to celebrate and support the event, told Urban News that this was a unique way of celebrating women and is important to include such activities in communities.

“We see women of all ages on the field, from young girls to our grandmothers and the energy is electrifying, the mood is just positive. We don’t always see this, as this is always done by men,’’ said Mabuza.

The final game was between Zoolake and Khizo’s with the final score of 5-1 and Zoolake General taking the cup home.
