Give Kaizer Chiefs league trophy – Buchanan

Maritzburg United midfielder Keagan Buchanan believes Kaizer Chiefs should be crowned the Absa Premiership champions if the season is cancelled.

The 2019/20 season was suspended by the Premier Soccer League (PSL) due to the coronavirus outbreak.

There have been calls from some that the PSL should follow the direction taken by some European leagues like Ligue 1 and the Belgian Pro League and cancel the current season.

While some favour this route, others are against the idea and want the season to be completed behind closed doors when the government declares that it is safe to do so.

“It is like asking me if Liverpool should win the league (in England). Look, I’m not going to be biased and say Chiefs should get the league,” Buchanan told reporters through a video conference as reported by The Sowetan.

“We have to give them credit that they are on top of the league and they have managed to stay there for long. If you look at France and Belgium, they have given the league to teams on top of the table,” added the former Chiefs midfielder.

Buchanan said he trusts PSL chairman Irvin Khoza and his executive that they will make the right decision.

“I have been reading the articles about the German Bundesliga (set to return this weekend) and seeing the Spanish La Liga going back to training. I mean, we have a very intelligent chairman of the league (Irvin Khoza) and he will implement the right structures in a way of going forward when they call us back,” concluded Buchanan.
