Chiefs coach Middendorp backs Ekstein

Kaizer Chiefs and Hendrick Ekstein are set for negotiations again this week and it is believed that the sides are close to finding common ground and sealing an extension deal.

Ekstein is reported to be looking for an improved package from Amakhosi which has stalled negotiations in the past and caused the midfielder to think about leaving and finding a new home elsewhere.

“The coach (Ernst Middendorp) has made it clear to management that he wants Ekstein in his team next season and is even willing to sacrifice a few senior players to free up some funds for the club to look into improving Ekstein’s deal,” said a source.

Meanwhile, as reported earlier, coach Ernst Middendorp has made it clear that if it was up to him, he would keep Ekstein at Amakhosi for next season.

“Pule is one of the best players I have worked with. I have said this a lot of times. He has a bit of an irritation at this moment. I hope he will stay. I hope he can be with us. He knows my interest and I think he should reflect a little bit on where he has been,” said Middendorp.
