Don’t regard City as title contenders, says Benni
Benni McCarthy has insisted his Cape Town City side are not in the race for the Absa Premiership title, adding that there are no favourites among those teams he does place in the running.

City lost 3-2 to Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday night, as Pitso Mosimane’s men went top of the table, the start of a crazy six days in which McCarthy’s team face second-placed Bidvest Wits away from home tomorrow, and then play Sundowns again in Cape Town on Tuesday, in a league game rescheduled because of Masandawana’s participation in the Caf Champions League.
City are currently fourth in the table, with nine games left to play in their Premiership season, six points behind Sundowns, who also have a game in hand on not just McCarthy’s side, but also Wits in second and Orlando Pirates in third.

“For us it is a game at a time,” said McCarthy, after admitting his side were deservedly beaten by Sundowns.
“We are not even title contenders. Just because they see us in fourth, they see us as title contenders. We don’t buy into that, we just want to enjoy ourselves and our football. Where we end up is a bonus … We are not as big as other teams, we don’t have that experience that has won titles before. Wits, Pirates and Sundowns are title chasers, we are just there to ruffle a few feathers.”
The City head coach, who will be without the suspended Edmilson Dove for the next two games, says the league is too unpredictable to predict who will end up champions.
“It is advantage no one,” added McCarthy.
“There are still a few games to go and in this league anyone can beat anyone … everyone has had a bad spell and lost points, there is no consistency in our league. The doors are wide open for Pirates, for Sundowns, for Wits, everyone is looking over their shoulder at who is coming … this league is getting better and better.”
