Nomvethe sets new PSL scoring record

Veteran striker Siyabonga 'Bhele' Nomvethe has become the new Premier Soccer League’s record goalscorer.

The KwaMashu-born forward came off the bench on Saturday night to score his first goal of the season against Mamelodi Sundowns to inspire AmaZulu to a 2-1 victory over the African champions.

Nomvethe’s goal was his 111th in the Premier Soccer League, surpassing former Sundowns striker Daniel Mudau’s tally of 110.

“It was a great feeling and it was a big day for me. I scored my 111th goal and I am very delighted because it was my first goal this season. I thank God for the opportunity that he has given me to be still playing at this age,” said Nomvethe.

Although he did not say it, but it is clear Nomvethe does not plan on hanging up his boots, stating his dedication and love for the game as the reasons he still runs his heart out every time.

“I don’t know when I will stop, my legs are still going strong and the goals keep coming. I never expected that I will reach 40 still playing,” he said.

“It is dedication. I am someone who never misses a training session. I love working every day and that is what keeps me fit. The talent that I have is a gift from God, that is why I am using this opportunity and continue playing,” he added.

Nomvethe’s 111 goals came in the colours of African Wanders, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Moroka Swallows and AmaZulu.

He has also scored 16 goals for Bafana Bafana.
