Professor joins Swazi side, gets warm reception

Former AmaZulu player Mlungisi 'Professor' Ngubane has joined Mbabane Highlanders and coach and according to sources in Swaziland he was given a warm reception by the fans despite drawing his first match in charge.

Ngubane has coached at various clubs in the Premier Soccer League and National First Division (NFD) with notable stints at Maritzburg United and Santos and joined the Swazi side a few weeks ago.

His last coaching stint in South Africa was with Cape Town All Stars who axed him after a few matches last season.

“He received a heart warning reception as he walked past the Highlanders fans after their goalless draw against Moneni Pirates at the Somhlolo National Stadium on Sunday. It was, to an extent, a well-deserved reception. Even though Ngubane had failed to inspire his side to a win in his first match in charge, there were some positives to draw from the performance,” said the source.

He said the team’s performances were a huge improvement from what they have been dishing out lately and Ngubane proved to be a brave coach making some unanticipated decisions.

“Highlanders looked much more organised than they were in the 4-0 humiliation at the hands of Young Buffaloes three weeks ago under then stand-in coach, Christian Thwala. On Sunday, they looked well drilled and their shape was clear. But goal scoring remains a challenge and Ngubane will have to find answers soon.

“Ngubane proved he will not shy away from big decisions on Sunday, leaving fan favourite Mfanufikile ‘Fash’ Ndzimandze on the bench,” he added.
