Schalkwyk backs Chiefs to win silverware under Middendorp

Former Kaizer Chiefs forward Gert Schalkwyk says Amakhosi have improved under the leadership of coach Ernst Middendorp.

“Ernst is trying something different, the style they play is different, Shaun was playing Chiefs and he knows how to move the players around, so if they don’t win anything this season next season they will be strong,” Schalkwyk told Phakaaathi.

The 36-year-old added that Chiefs had the perfect combination of young players and experienced players during his time with the Naturena outfit. He believes that could be the ingredient needed at Chiefs at the moment.

“When we were playing we had a lot of experienced guys, we had John (Moshoeu) (Fabian) McCarthy and (Cyril) Nzama. From the defence to the strikers we had an experienced player in every position to manage the two or three youngsters starting next to them on that day. That time we had guys who wanted to win every game. We even won at training when it was XI versus XI. The experienced players told us ‘you must win, we need this trophy’.”

Chiefs advanced to the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup this past weekend, beating ABC Motsepe League side The Magic FC 3-0 in Port Elizabeth.
