Sundowns rekindle interest in Chiefs’ Lebese

Mamelodi Sundowns are said to have renewed their interest in Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Lebese.

Sundowns were rumoured to be keen to sign the 28-year-old midfielder back in 2015, but Lebese opted to sign a three-year contract with Amakhosi.

Lebese has been one of Chiefs’ best players over the last three seasons, however, he has found it difficult to break into the team’s starting lineup since the beginning of the year.

Edmore Chirambadare is the preferred starter in the left wing position, with Lebese coming in as a substitute.

However, it seems this has not stopped Sundowns’ interest in his services.

“Pitso likes Lebese and he believes that he can add value to his team. They [Sundowns] are looking to capitalise on his current situation [of not getting a starting berth at Chiefs] and try to convince him to come to Chloorkop,” said a source close to Sundowns.

Lebese’s contract is expected to expire at the end of June 2018.

It remains to be seen if Chiefs will agree to let go of one of their star players at the end of the season or if they would hang on to the Mamelodi-born player.
