Sundowns target Pirates scalp

Mamelodi Sundowns will look to continue their momentum in the Absa Premiership when they host Orlando Pirates at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday at 3.30pm.


Sundowns claimed a third successive league win (and seventh in the space of eight matches) when they defeated Bloemfontein Celtic 1-0 away on February 8. The Brazilians are placed fifth on the Premiership log with 22 points from 10 matches.

Pirates saw their winless streak in the league extended to five matches when they were held 0-0 at Platinum Stars on February 8.The Soweto giants have claimed nine points from seven away matches this season.

The Buccaneers are placed 10th on the Absa Premiership log with 19 points from 14 matches.

In head-to-head stats, Sundowns and Pirates have met in 63 league matches since 1985.

The Brazilians have 27 wins compared to 19 for the Buccaneers, while 17 matches have been drawn.

Sundowns have won 13 of their 32 home league matches against Pirates, suffering nine defeats in the process. Last season the Brazilians completed a league ‘double’ over the Buccaneers, winning 2-0 at home and 2-1 away.

Sundowns have won just one of their last home league matches against Pirates.
