SuperSport striker Macuphu opens up about Bafana snub

The 29-year-old feels his efforts were enough to earn him a place in Baxter’s team.

On-form Mxolisi Macuphu says he expected to see his name on Stuart Baxter’s Bafana Bafana squad list but was left disappointed when he found out that he had been excluded.

Bafana will play Libya in a crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifier where they will need a draw to advance to Egypt’s edition of the continental spectacle in June.

The SuperSport United striker is on loan from Bidvest Wits and he has netted four goals in five league appearances for Matsatsantsa. The 29-year-old feels his efforts were enough to earn him a place in Baxter’s team.

“One you have been there you want to be there all the time so I was expecting to be called-up like any other ambitious player,” he said.

“But I respect the coach’s decision because if I was in his shoes I would also want to go with the tried and test players who have been there. It is their last game and he needed everyone he trusted so I understand his judgment and selection.

“If a coach has you in mind it is also good as well. If he mentions you in a press conference and say some other players deserve a chance but you’ve just got to keep on pushing and who knows, the Afcon is coming,” he added.

Macuphu is expected to lead the line when SuperSport host Kaizer Chiefs in the Absa Premiership at the Mbombela Stadium tonight.
