Tau reflects on his brilliant assist

Percy Tau produced what most pundits described as the assist of the season when he set up Khama Billiat in Mamelodi Sundowns’ 1-0 win over Cape Town City.

The pacey forward started off with a Usain Bolt-like run near the centre line, firing into the 18-yard area, beating several defenders on his way to flicking the ball with his back against goals for Billiat, who connected with an equally sublime volley.

“It was one of those special moments that we as soccer players will always look back at and laugh,” said Tau.

For the 23-year-old, producing such brilliance goes down to the phrase “practice makes perfect”.

“I always do a lot of skills in my own training and I am happy to see it coming out in a match and with a good goal. I think Khama connected very well with the ball. I know where Khama goes most of the time, I don’t need to look,” said Tau.

Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt said had such an assist been provided by global superstar Lionel Messi, it would’ve been abuzz all over the world.

“It motivates me to get such compliments from a top coach,” said Tau, who is tipped to walk away with the coveted Footballer-of-the-Season award at the end of the season.
