Fowler praises ‘phenomenal’ Salah

Robbie Fowler has lauded Mohamed Salah's amazing start to life in a Liverpool shirt, and believes the Egyptian and the Reds' other forwards can cause problems for Chelsea when the two teams meet in the English Premier League on Saturday.

The former Liverpool striker was speaking after playing in the pro-am event at the Gary Player Invitational in Sun City on Friday.

Salah couldn’t quite make the grade at Chelsea after joining them in 2013, failing to break into the first team on a regular basis before moving to Fiorentina and then AS Roma in Serie A.

Since joining Liverpool this season, however, Salah has been sensational, topping the Premier League scoring charts with nine goals and netting a total of 14 times in all competitions.

“I don’t know what happened with him at Chelsea. If you look at his form last season at Roma he was very good, he scored a lot of goals. At Chelsea he didn’t play many games for whatever reason, but I am not too interested, because if he was scoring there he wouldn’t have had the chance to come to Liverpool,” said Fowler, who still works as an ambassador for Liverpool.

“He has been phenomenal. I noticed pre-season he was a handful, I know people say pre-season is not the Premier League, but he has hit the ground running, he has scored goals and offered assists. Long may it continue, he looks a real good signing.”

Fowler believes that Chelsea could be better off playing it defensive at Anfield on Saturday.

“If Chelsea come to Anfield and sit deep, the game will be difficult. But if they come and play the way they can, and are more offensive, I think it plays into Liverpool’s hands, it leaves space for the likes of Mane and Salah to capitalise. Liverpool are a different team at home, I am sure there will be goals tomorrow and hopefully there will be more Liverpool goals.”
