Percy Tau shines as Club Brugge hold Real Madrid

Percy Tau provided a superb assist for the opening goal and gave a brilliant all-round display on Tuesday evening as Club Brugge just missed out on a famous victory over Real Madrid in a Group A Uefa Champions League clash at the Bernabeau.

Tau started the game with a wonderful first touch that took him clear of two Real Madrid defenders and basically carried on from there with a wonderful performance.

He broke the offside trap in the 9th minute and sent in a fine cross that Emmanuel Dennis bundled past Thibault Courtois in the Real Madrid goal, though it took VAR to confirm that both Tau and Dennis were onside in the build up.

The 25 year-old came close to scoring in the 34th minute as he burst clear, and fired at goal, but Courtois made a fine save.

Dennis then doubled Brugge’s lead six minutes before half time, but Real Madrid piled on the pressure after the break, and pulled one back in the 55th minute through a Sergio Ramos header.

Brugge hung on, however, and looked likely to eke out a stunning win until their captain Ruud Vormer was sent off for a second yellow card six minutes from time, and from the resulting free kick, Casemiro headed past Simon Mignolet to make it 2-2.

Tau was making his Uefa Champions League group stage debut after spending the whole of his Belgian side’s Group A opener against Galatasaray on the bench.

The Bafana Bafana star has been in brilliant form in Belgium this season, with three goals already in all competitions.

Tau had already appeared for Brugge in this season’s Champions League in the qualifying rounds, but this was arguably the biggest club game of his career so far, up against the likes of Eden Hazard, Ramos, Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.
