Boy (17) arrested

One boy was arrested after he and five accomplices tried to rob two school girls of their cellphones last Monday.

A Grade Nine learner from High School Dr Johan Jurgens was walking down Colliery Road when she was approached by six of the boys, who threatened her with a knife.

“They ran away with her cellphone, heading towards Twelfth Street. Here they found another Grade Nine learner from the same school and tried to rob her the same way,” said Captain Ramphora, Springs police spokesman.

But she wasn’t having any of it and grabbed one of the boys by the T-shirt, surprising the other five boys, who then ran away.

The boy hit her in an attempt to make her let go, but each time he hit her, she hit back.

According to Springs police spokesman Captain Johannes Ramphora, the girl eventually lost her grip and the boy managed to escape from her.

But he was unable to escape as he tripped on the pavement and was caught by a ProSafe security guard who was parked nearby.

“The girl’s mother was also nearby and she came to her daughter’s aid as well,” said Capt Ramphora.

The boy, a 17-year-old from Tsakane, was apprehended and taken to the Springs Police Station, where he was arrested.

A case of robbery was opened against him and he was taken to a place of safety in Pretoria.

“We contacted his grandmother, whom he lives with, and she just said ‘he is a very naughty boy’,” said Capt Ramphora.

The boy was brought back to Springs last Tuesday to appear in the Springs Lower Court, but the case was postponed to today (Thursday).

Capt Ramphora said, “He was taken to another place of safety in Johannesburg until his next court appearance.”
