Be safe

Discribed as the silly season, Christmas is not only a time for celebration, but it's also the chosen time for many criminal activities.

The community is being urged by the police to be on high alert this season.

Although there are just a few weeks before Christmas, many criminals have already started looking for their very own bonus.

Springs police spokesman Captain Johannes Ramphora is urging the community to make sure they are not easy targets.

“If you have gone shopping, do not leave the goods on your car seat,” he says.

Capt Ramphora explains that this is the best way to tempt a criminal who may be wondering about.

According to Capt Ramphora, November and December are the months where the crime escalates to alarming rates.

He attributes this to the fact that criminals are aware that people are happy and generally care-free.

Many of the working class have received bonuses and are on a spending spree, a great motivation for criminals.

He adds that even though people are parked in an enclosed area, it is not wise to assume that the area is safe.

“Although this is a happy time and spirits are high, one should never tempt a criminal,” he concludes.

Things to be aware of during the festive season.

  • Make sure that all your doors are locked.
  • Be aware of any suspicious people wondering around parking areas.
  • Do not allow a stranger to help carry your shopping.
  • Do not leave valuables like cellphones, wallets and cash in the car.
  • Do not leave windows in the car open.
  • Check that no one is following you on your way home from the mall.
  • Be aware of people inside shops who may offer to sell you goods at discounted prices.
