Arrested for theft

A man, who has been robbing people of their money pretending to be one of a local bank's staff members, was arrested last Thursday.

Captain Johannes Ramphora of the Springs police says on December 31 the man asked the manager of the Springs Absa bank if he could use an office, all in the name of safety, as he claimed to have money that he wanted to count before depositing it.

He says as the manager left the man so that he could freely count his money, one of the bank’s customers became the suspect’s victim. He says the suspect convinced his victim that he was one of the bank’s employees and offered to assist him.

The suspect asked the victim to give him the money so that he could deposit it for him and go fetch a receipt to confirm his transaction from another office.

The suspect never returned. The victim reported the matter to the manager who told him that the man is not working at the bank.

Capt Ramphora says the suspect, who was out on a parole, was arrested for the same crime a few years ago. The suspect is expected to appear in the Springs Magistrate’s Court soon.
