Sewage in Grootvlei raises concern

A sewage flow has gone unnoticed near Grootvaly road, leaving the area with an unbearable stench.

Stinking sewage containing tons of toilet paper and human faeces is flowing down Grootvaly Road.

Chantelle Godfrey from the Grootvlei area says they have reported the matter to the Ekurhuleni Metro, but the municipality has not responded.

Godfrey says the sewage flowing near the mine in Grootvlei poses a threat to the environment as no one knows where it comes from.

“Soon people will start getting sick from the horrible stench – it really is unbearable.”

The sewage can be mistaken for muddy water when one drives along the road but as one approaches, it becomes evident that it is smelly sewage.

It flows to a stream close to the mine which may also be very hazardous to people who live in the abandoned buildings hidden behind the bushes.

Godfrey says she and other residents staying close to Grootvaly Road have lost count of the numerous times they have reported the matter.

“We reported the problem when we became aware of the horrible smell because we were afraid it would get worse since no one usually walks there.

“Unfortunately, the very thing that we were afraid of is happening currently.”

Godfrey says they are worried that in the long-term this pollution will affect residents staying close by.

The metro had failed to comment at the time of publishing.
