Hijacked panel van loaded with wine recovered in less than an hour in Springs

Their car displayed a portable flashing blue light on the roof. The van transporting 29 boxes of wine to the value of R100 000 was hijacked.

Just after 8am on Thursday morning, a male driver and his crew travelling on the N12 by Delmas Road in Springs were stopped underneath the bridge by three unknown males impersonating police officers.

The swift action of the EMPD Specialised Task Team and the tracking company led to the recovery of the panel van.

The van was found abandoned and unlocked on the R50 Delmas gravel road at 8.48am with keys in the ignition and 29 boxes of wine.

“Although the officers’ response was quick – it was unfortunately not quick enough to rescue victims.

“The victims were, at a later stage, located at the Springs Police Station after spending a few minutes inside the suspects’ car’s boot; they were dumped in Riverleigh.

“Victims managed to hitch-hike to the nearest police station, unscathed.

“Police are confident that the people responsible will soon be behind bars,” says Kobeli Mokheseng, spokesperson for the EMPD.

The vehicle was booked in at SAPS Van Ryn Deep Pound in Benoni for safekeeping.
