Female boxing takes centre stage at Springs Mall tournament on August 9
The Bert Collins Boxing Club will host a female-dominated tournament at Springs Mall, showcasing 52 boxers, including SA and Eswatini champions.
The Bert Collins Boxing Club, in partnership with Springs Mall, is inviting the public to attend a female-dominated boxing tournament on August 9, starting at 10:00.
Jeanette Dyzel, the club’s head coach, told the Springs Advertiser that the event aims to promote women’s boxing and demonstrate that the sport is safe and empowering for women, helping them build both self-defence skills and self-esteem.
The tournament will feature 26 matches involving 52 boxers. Among the youngest competitors of the day are Frederik Dicks (3) and Devantè Coelho (4), who will face off in an exhibition bout.
Clubs from across Gauteng will participate, alongside teams from Eswatini. The main event of the day will be a headline match between the current South African 81kg female champion, Geannè Dicks (representing Bert Collins), and Eswatini’s female champion, Lindelwa Nomani Fakudze.

“In the ring, both are determined to be the best, but outside of it, they can be the best of friends,” said Dyzel.
She emphasised that boxing is a sport built on respect and discipline. “Boxing is against bullying and street fighting. It’s a gentleman’s and lady’s sport. Our first and most important rule is the safety of the boxer,” she added.
The tournament will feature 15 female boxers, with girls as young as eight competing against one another. Ten male boxers will take to the ring after the women’s bouts conclude.
Dyzel encouraged the public to bring their camping chairs and enjoy the action.
“Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy an action-packed programme with us, and it’s all free.”
