Payneville Primary School launches reading club on International Literacy Day

Payneville Primary School will celebrate International Literacy Day on September 8 by launching its first reading club. The event will promote a love for reading among learners, with parents, local organisations and the community taking part in interactive literacy activities.

As the world marks International Literacy Day on September 8, Payneville Primary School is inviting parents and guardians to join their celebration, which will include the launch of the school’s first reading club. The initiative aims to promote reading among learners and instil a lifelong love of books.

Speaking to the Springs Advertiser, Zanele Langa, a teacher and founder of the reading club, said the event is designed to teach learners about books and make them fall in love with reading.

Organisations taking part include Nali Ibali, Coatlands, Sicathulangolwazi, which was founded by Langa, the Department of Basic Education, and local library services.

She emphasised that celebrating International Literacy Day is important for instilling a reading culture in learners, which also supports academic performance.

Langa explained that the school collaborated with these organisations because they share the same vision of developing literacy among students.

“All these organisations focus on literacy. They come every Friday to conduct interactive activities, and we’ve seen a great improvement in our learners,” she said.

The reading club being launched is inspired by a book read by Langa’s learners, which motivated them to participate.

“The book was written by a teenager with multiple disabilities. It encourages readers to have faith despite challenges and shows that the author achieved success thanks to encouragement from teachers to read,” she shared.

Parents will also take part in the activities and learn ways to support reading at home.

Planned activities include Lego games, puzzles, word searches, spelling bees, and drama sessions where learners read a script and then dramatise what they have learned. Langa highlighted that the event will positively impact learners and the broader community.

“We will also encourage businesspeople to donate digital devices to support digital literacy, as the theme for the day is promoting literacy in the digital era,” she said.
