WATCH: Springs Boys High School Tattoo dazzles with stellar performances at Carnival City
The Springs Boys High School Tattoo lit up Carnival City’s Big Top Arena with music, choreography and vibrant performances, leaving the audience thrilled as the school prepares to defend its national title in Durban.
Stellar performances marked the Springs Boys High School (SBHS) Tattoo’s success, held on September 6 at the Big Top Arena in Carnival City.
The line-up featured the school’s band, the Dowerglen Panthers, the SA Sea Cadets, and other performers. Speaking to the Springs Advertiser at the event, SBHS bandmaster Shawn Boucher said that preparing for the show was not easy, as there were many groups, but the performances were amazing.
He added that the groups kept to schedule, allowing the show to flow smoothly.
The main challenge, he explained, was that they only had one rehearsal with all performers available, during which everyone had to first get used to the venue, entry points, and performance area size.

Boucher noted that preparing these groups isn’t an easy task, especially when choreography and music need to be combined.
“Performing is always an experience, especially when you’re performing to such an amazing audience. The vibe and the cheering get the blood pumping, and the bands always put on the most amazing shows when they experience this. Maybe it is a combination of nervousness and excitement pushing them to their limits,” said the bandmaster.
In October, the school’s band will be defending their national title in Durban. Despite not reaching the fundraising sales target, Boucher emphasised that the Tattoo is not only a fundraising event.
He expressed gratitude to many people, including the Big Top Arena for hosting them, and the EMPD and Sausage Saloon Carnival City for providing food for the performers.

“I would like to thank Benoni High School Pipe Band, Field Band Foundation – Kwa-Thema Band, Hoërskool Oosterland Marching Band, Dowerglen Panthers – Drum Majorettes, Springs Sea Cadets, and Studio K for being a part of the show. Last but not least, Marshall Music for providing backline equipment to make the quality sound we were privileged to have on the night,” said Boucher.
Before the show, matriculant Ntokozo Kunene, who plays the tenor saxophone, shared that he had to juggle prelims and band practice. He said that the items on the show were “insane” and that the band was ready to give the audience the performance of a lifetime.
The opening act was performed by trumpeter Musa Zwane, who played the bugle. He told the publication that he was nervous but was able to get into the zone.
“It was fun to share the music, and working through those initial jitters made it a memorable experience,” said Zwane.
