Bert Collins boxing tournament highlights young East Rand talent
The Bert Collins boxing tournament in Springs saw young and seasoned boxers battle in exciting bouts, earning praise for courage, technique, and sportsmanship.
Bert Collins Boxing Club hosted another boxing tournament at its Springs clubhouse on October 25, drawing participants from various clubs across the East Rand.
The club’s head coach, Jeanette Dyzel, shared the outcomes with Springs Advertiser.
In a show bout, JT Mienie (13) from Brakpan-Oos Primary School was first in the ring against M. Mthetwa from Mabuza Boxing Academy in Kwa-Thema.
Dyzel said that both young boxers were declared winners. Mienie impressed the crowd with his sharp technique and fearless energy.
Next in the ring was 15-year-old Tristan van Tonder from Olympia Park School, who fought A. Mijacu from Mabuza Boxing Academy in Kwa-Thema.

“Van Tonder fought with heart and determination through three tough rounds, securing a well-deserved victory on points. His composure and focus made his coaches and supporters extremely proud,” she said.
Blessing Taguma (21) concluded the tournament for the club when he faced Jonathan Bothma from Knockout Box Gym in Benoni, a seasoned silver medallist who had previously competed at the South African Championships.
Dyzel said Taguma showed tremendous courage and resilience in a hard-fought, three-round battle, losing on a 2–1 point decision. Despite the result, his performance proved his strength, grit, and sportsmanship.
“The club is proud of all three boxers. Their discipline, hard work, and passion continue to make the Bert Collins name shine in the boxing community.”
