Beloved Geduld wedding shop shuts its doors after nearly four decades

Loyal customers asked her to stay, but after 37 years, Elize Launspach has made the difficult decision to close Wedding World, the much-loved wedding shop in Geduld.

Wedding World, a much-loved business in Geduld, officially closed its doors on November 29 after 37 years of service.

The shop was originally set to close last year, as reported by the Springs Advertiser. However, loyal customers, unable to imagine the community without it, urged the 83-year-old owner, Elize Launspach, to keep going.

She honoured their request and kept the business open for another year before making the heartfelt decision to close permanently.

“We started off with a small shop in Fourth Avenue where I made wedding dresses and flowers. I told myself I was going to have the biggest wedding shop in the East Rand,” Elize said proudly.

In addition to wedding dresses, the business also offered catering.

“We started by hiring catering materials before buying our own. It became so successful that sometimes we had two weddings in different places on the same day,” she recalled.

The building from which Wedding World operated for all these years was originally five separate shops that Elize purchased and converted into one large store.

The shop also designed evening gowns, matric dresses, and outfits for bridesmaids, flower girls, and mothers of the bride, all of which could be rented or purchased.

As she paged through photo albums, Elize reminisced about the milestones throughout the years.

One album in particular was filled with articles from the Springs Advertiser, highlighting the business’s journey. She says closing the shop is a bittersweet moment for herself and her employees.

“This process would have been much easier if my late husband were still here. I miss him dearly,” she shared.

She has three children, Tanya, Melinda, and Johan, and nine grandchildren, who are all a comfort to her during this time.

She says she will forever cherish the experiences and the leap of faith that led her to start the business.

“I love designing. I enjoy the creativity it brings out in me. I am filled with great pride when I think about all the dresses we have made. These hands have worked,” she said warmly.

She thanked the Springs community for their unwavering support throughout the years.
